The Bearcat by Electra is believed to be the first commercially produced electronic device made solely for the monitoring of police and fire transmissions. The devices began production in 1968/1969. Three different models were produced, all identical, except for a stamped designation on the back label. One was tuned for Low-VHF reception. One was for High-VHF reception. The third was for UHF reception. The radio featured no switches to turn on and off the 8 channels that the device could monitor. The device required crystals for tuning particular frequencies.
